dandan's fraction growing post =)

IMPROPER FRACTIONS & MIXED FRACTIONS..HOW ARE THEY THE SAME??

well ok they're not the same by how they look, i mean mixed fractions is a mix of a whole number and a fraction while improper fraction is just a fraction that is... well in the form of b/a .. which makes it IMPROPER....but in a way they are the same.....

FOR EXAMPLE: 1 4/5 <---that is a mixed fraction

we can make that mixed fraction into an improper by: multiplying the whole number and the denominator and adding the numerator to the product.. you then get your numerator for your improper fraction... the denominator remains the same.... so: 5 X 1 = 5 + 4 = 9
IMPROPER FRACTION IS 9/5 <---that's they're similarity
HERE IS A LINK TO AN AWESOME WEBSITE WHERE THEY EXPLAIN EVERYTHING ABOUT FRACTIONS...CHECK IT OUT...IT's AWESOMEE!!!! http://www.kidsolr.com/math/fractions.html (by the way... this is numbers 3 AND 6)

4-A) Mr. Harbeck had cats and dogs, 3/4 of the dogs were white, and 2/3 of his cats were white also, how many pets altogether are white??

4-B) Dhona, Annalyn and Yvanne were working on a recipe. They accidently put 2 4/8 cups of sugar, so they took away 1 3/4 of the sugar. How much sugar was there supposed to be in the first place?

OK WELL IM FINISHED MY BLOG NOW!! HOPE IT WAS GOOD!

hmm i'd have to find the lcd so that would be 12.

3/4 + 2/3 = 9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12.

mr harbeck has 17 white pets! : D

2 4/8 - 1 3/4 = 2 4/8 - 3 6/8
rewrite the greater mixed number so...

2 4/8 - 2 6/8 = 2/8

There was soppose to be 2/8 of sugar in the first place.. I think haha

ANSWER:
The lowest common denomenator is 12 so 3/4 will be 9/12 cause:
3 X 3 = 9
4 X 3 = 12

Then: 2/3 becomes 8/12 cause:
2 X 4 = 8
3 X 4 = 12

9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12.
Harbeck has 17 white pets.

4-B) Dhona, Annalyn and Yvanne were working on a recipe. They accidently put 2 4/8 cups of sugar, so they took away 1 3/4 of the sugar. How much sugar was there supposed to be in the first place?
ANSWER:
The lowest common denonmenator is 8.
So 1 3/4 will become 1 6/8
3 X 2 = 6
4 x 2 = 8

I did that cycle of multiplying, where you multiply the denomenator and the whole number and add the numerator
2 4/8 - 1 6/8 = 20/8 - 14/8 = 6/8
In lowest terms that is: 3/4.

There was suppose to be only 6/8 of sugar?

yeah.. hmm, I got a different answer than helen. so I think I'm wrong.

a.)
3/4 = 9/12
2/3 = 8/12
add 9/12 and 8/12
Answer: 17/12

b.)
2 4/8 =(4/8 + 8/8 <-borrow from 2) = 12/8
s0, 1 12/8
1 3/4 = 6/8

Subtract 6/8 to 1 12/8
Answer:6/8 or 3/4

Nice Post!!:)

4. a) 3/4 + 2/3

= 9/12 + 8/12
= 17/12
= 1 5/12

b) 2 4/8 - 1 3/4

= 2 4/8 - 1 6/8

= 8x2+4
= 20/8

= 8x1+6
= 14/8

= 20/8 - 14/8
= 6/8
= 3/4

by the way... that problem (b) made me sweat... hehehe niice post!

So, to find the answer you have to find the lowest common denominator which in this case is 12.

3/4 + 2/3 = 9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12.

Mr harbeck has 17 white pets all together.

Well the common denominator for both of them is 12...
3/4 = 9/12
2/3 = 8/12
and then u add the two..
9/12+8/12=17/12<-ANSWER=D

4-B) Dhona, Annalyn and Yvanne were working on a recipe. They accidently put 2 4/8 cups of sugar, so they took away 1 3/4 of the sugar. How much sugar was there supposed to be in the first place?

So....... 2 4/8
-1 3/4 -> 1 6/8
HMMM...
1 8/8+4/8=1 12/8
1 12/8 - 1 6/8=6/8<-ANSWER

--I THINK I DID IT RIGHT..--
-NICE POST=D
